Addressing big issues

In 2017, Manchester Literature Festival focused on community, power and politics, with talks on feminism, gender, gay rights, racism, privilege and activism. Speakers included human-rights campaigner Shami Chakrabarti, US activist and writer Rebecca Solnit, and political race author Reni Eddo-Lodge.

Spraying the message

The bold brand campaign for the festival was inspired by protest and activism. We created a range of simple black-and-white posters, banners, brochures, print ads and merchandise and ‘defaced’ them with anarchic graffiti-style graphics. A Star of David referenced talks on Jewish history, while an X suggested voting and politics, another key festival topic. Examples ranged from highly provocative marks to more light-hearted graphics for family-friendly events.
